In this broken world, people form wishes out of what they lack: some long for belonging, some chase freedom, some want to make their country better, and some want to erase everyone’s pain.
A wish changes a person’s fate, and it also changes trade routes, kingdoms, and history. Yet the price it leaves behind is often paid by people many years later.
Cradling three-month-old Shen Le, Xiban walks into the sand sea, wanting only to bring this child through the trade route alive. Storms, bandits, oases, and a band of fellow travelers each carrying their own wish gradually pull the journey away from its original course.
A wish never guarantees happiness. It only leaves the responsibility to those who come after the wish is fulfilled.
