A · Professional problem solving and implementation21
- Scrolling a list lowers frame rate, and the performance trace repeatedly shows layout work. How would you determine whether code is causing layout thrashing, and why does DOM read/write order matter?
- The page HTML arrives quickly, but users still wait a long time to see the main content. How would you trace blockers across resource discovery, download, parsing, execution, and painting?
- Design a reusable virtualized list: it renders only visible rows, but selection state must not leak to different data when DOM nodes are recycled. How would you define the interface and test it?
- A service has stable average latency but periodic p99 spikes near allocation peaks. How would you determine whether garbage collection is responsible and distinguish it from other pauses?
- A request starts several async tasks. After the client disconnects or the request times out, some downstream work still uses threads and connections. How would you propagate cancellation and release those resources?
- A set of asynchronous callbacks prints the same loop variable or a value different from what was expected. Using a language you know, explain binding and closure capture, then give a verifiable correction.
- A compiler may reorder or eliminate code. Which program behavior may it change, and which externally observable behavior must it preserve? Explain with a concurrency or I/O example.
- An object overrides equality but keeps the default hash implementation, causing failed lookups in a hash collection. Explain the equality/hash contract and how you would test it.
- A library’s generic type information is unavailable at runtime, causing reflection or serialization to behave unexpectedly. Explain which runtime behaviors erasure affects and how you might redesign the API.
- A collaborative tool shows who is online and where they are editing. Brief delay is acceptable, but disconnected members must not remain online indefinitely. How would you design updates and expiry?
- A product needs to send transactional and optional marketing notifications to tens of millions of users, who can change channel preferences at any time. How would you design the sending process?
- During a cross-time-zone handoff, a critical alert was sent. The outgoing on-call engineer assumed the incoming engineer would handle it, while the incoming engineer never acknowledged it; escalation was delayed. How would you reconstruct the ownership chain, fix acknowledgment and handoff, and verify the change?
- A service’s resident memory is stable, but major page faults, disk I/O, and tail latency rise together. How would you distinguish changes in the working set, mapping behavior, memory pressure, and application access patterns?
- A global service must enable different features and retention rules by region while headquarters still needs an overall operational view. How would you divide configuration, enforcement, and aggregation?
- After a downstream service becomes unstable, upstream traffic appears flat while request counts and queue depth double and several services time out. How would you determine whether retries are amplifying the failure?
- A subscription product includes trials, renewals, grace periods, refunds, and family sharing. How would you design entitlement checks so several services receive consistent, traceable results?
- Clients report occasional request timeouts while server processing time looks normal. How would you use TCP retransmissions, RTT, and connection state to locate where the delay occurs?
- Several teams copy de-identified data into development, staging, and performance environments with different refresh schedules. How would you design access, lifecycle, and reproducibility?
- Two processes both access address 0x1000. Why do they usually not read or write the same physical memory? Explain the address translation and operating-system responsibilities.
- A new model improves offline evaluation, but answer quality may fall for a small set of high-value users. How would you stage a canary, observe it, and decide when to expand traffic?
- A product depends on an external model API, and the provider may restrict request frequency or change available models. How would you design switch rules and temporary shutdowns for noncritical features so quality changes after switching are visible?

B · Business understanding and domain modeling10
- A promotion increases sales volume, but new customers’ first orders remain unprofitable after discounts, channel fees, and fulfillment costs. How would you isolate the loss and decide whether to change the offer threshold, audience, channel, or stop the promotion?
- A new plan makes more users willing to try the product, but some customers who would have bought a higher-priced plan switch to the cheaper option. What commercial model and observation window would you use to judge whether the plan portfolio creates incremental value?
- Map the value flow among users, suppliers, the platform, and payers in a two-sided marketplace you know. Explain how value and responsibility change when a service is not fulfilled.
- A new industry or regulatory requirement forces a product workflow change. How would you trace from the requirement to affected participants, value-chain steps, business commitments, and internal systems?
- After a promotion ends, operations considers the campaign complete, product sees orders still being fulfilled, and finance says settlement is not yet possible. How would you define each party’s objects, states, and state transitions?
- The same person may encounter a product through ads, an agency, a partner, and a self-serve channel, and different parties may pay. How would you distinguish customer, buyer, user, and acquisition touchpoint in the business model?
- An enterprise customer has multiple organizations, departments, and members, and a member may act for different organizations. When designing customer activity analysis, how would you define the grain and relationships among customer, account, organization, and user?
- Business units use an “active customer” metric, but some define it by payment, others by usage, and others by likelihood to renew. How would you decide which definitions should be standardized and which should remain distinct concepts?
- The commercial rule for a service changes from a free trial to a refund after conditions are met, while historical orders were signed under the old terms. How would you evolve the model and workflow so both old and new transactions remain explainable?
- A supplier API replaces one “delivered” status with “dispatched” and “received,” but historical data has no basis for distinguishing them. How would you update the domain model, external contract, and related reporting?

C · Value judgment and direction setting9
- An acquisition campaign drives many registrations, but some regions cannot yet be served, reducing the share of new users who can actually receive the service. How would you define and report the campaign result?
- A checkout experiment improves payment completion, but complaints and refunds also increase. How would you judge whether the experiment succeeded, and how long would you wait before deciding?
- Product, operations, and sales reports all say “retention,” but refer to return visits, key-feature use, and renewal. How would you clarify the measures so each name maps to a user behavior and business decision?
- A new automated workflow doubles processing speed and reduces human review, but errors have a greater impact on a small group of high-value customers. How would you assess net value and decide whether to expand it?
- A major customer will pay a high price for a custom feature, but reuse by other customers is uncertain. Ongoing maintenance, permissions, and data rules add cost, and sales has promised a delivery date. How would you compare a one-off build, productizing it, a service, or declining—and decide whether to invest?
- Interviews and support tickets repeatedly mention the same problem, but few users in a pilot are willing to change their current workflow. How would you determine whether the issue is how the need was expressed, switching cost, target-user selection, or problem priority?
- You inherit a mature product with a stable user base and stalled growth, and the team wants to launch new features immediately. What product understanding would you build in the first two weeks before deciding where to invest?
- Next quarter, the team can keep only one initiative that directly drives growth and one foundational capability project, and each option has strong advocates. How would you compare them and choose a portfolio?
- A major competitor makes a feature free that large customers have repeatedly requested, but you have not observed customer losses because of it. How would you determine whether this is an emerging competitive risk, a negotiation signal, or a feature gap not worth following?

D · Delivery and ongoing operations10
- A data-write incident has stopped and service metrics look normal, but users still report missing records. How would you organize recovery validation and follow-up communication?
- For three consecutive quarters, several teams underestimated integration and acceptance time. How would you use forecasts and actuals to determine whether the error comes from estimation, scope change, or scheduling, and improve the next forecast?
- Project requests backed by senior sponsors tend to move ahead, while compliance and infrastructure work without executive sponsorship repeatedly slips. How would you create a transparent portfolio intake and prioritization process?
- The organization requires every project to use the same weekly reports, reviews, and approval gates; a small exploratory effort now spends more time reporting than executing. How would you design tiered governance without missing high-risk work?
- A project depending on a platform interface is already integrating when the upstream team announces a semantic change this quarter and cannot support both formats indefinitely. How would you decide compatibility, migration order, and release boundaries across projects?
- Four months after delivery, the targeted cost reduction has not appeared in financial reports. The sponsor says the system is still in a learning period, while finance considers the project closed. How would you clarify benefit ownership and the validation window?
- A new service launches on schedule, but the project team is moving to other goals; on-call ownership, documentation, cost monitoring, and follow-up improvements have no clear owners. How would you determine whether the project is ready to hand off?
- A serious production incident pulls two specialists from a project team for a full week, putting a milestone at risk. How would you update the forecast, separate incident and project responsibilities, and help stakeholders make trade-offs?
- A release project has capacity, vendor-delivery, and data-quality risks, each below its individual escalation threshold, but all may converge in the same week. How would you assess the combined risk and decide what action to take?
- After a strategic shift, several in-flight projects no longer support the new goals, but teams have invested effort and made external commitments. How would you decide what to stop immediately, what to close out, and how to transfer knowledge, contracts, and capacity?
